Ms. Mercy
High School English & Literature Teacher
Department: Teaching Staff
Ms. Mercy's teaching philosophy is built on a simple but profound belief: that positive, trusting relationships are the essential foundation for learning. She strives to create a classroom environment where every student feels seen, heard, and comfortable taking intellectual risks. This approach, inspired by educators like Rita Pierson, allows her students to explore literature not just as an academic subject, but as a vital tool for understanding the human experience and finding their own voices.
She is on a mission to prove that literature is anything but boring. Ms. Mercy hopes her passion for language is infectious, aiming for her students to leave her class with a genuine enjoyment for the incredible range of human stories—from the witty social maneuvers in Pride and Prejudice to the powerful spiritual dilemmas in Death and the King's Horseman. Whether her students are getting tangled in the magical mishaps of A Midsummer Night's Dream, feeling inspired by the determined heroism in The Whale Rider, or finding quiet strength in the advice of Rudyard Kipling's "If—", her goal is for them to see the beauty art can create with just words. More importantly, she hopes it gives them the confidence to go out and spread a little of their own.
Ms. Mercy's commitment to holistic student development extends beyond the classroom as the Patron of the Taekwondo Club, where she supports students in building discipline, focus, and self-confidence in a different context.
